Integrating Solenoid Valves into Industrial Ethernet Networks
For diagnostic data collection, turning simple devices into smart devices can provide important process information
Data collection has given us the ability to see patterns and trends in data sets which we can use to predict certain events like earthquakes and extreme weather events. Applying these similar principles of data collection to processes and process equipment can give us a unique perspective into how components in systems function, wear and eventually fail.
Turning simple devices into smart devices that can provide important process information is not always easy though and brings up unique challenges of mining through the data and converting it to something useful. While solenoid valves are not traditionally devices that can provide a lot of information, Burkert has engineered a way to make these devices smart. The Type 8605 cable plug gives us the ability to turn any solenoid valve into a smart devices that can give you diagnostic data like current, valve position, NAMUR status and voltage alarms. This gives us the ability to predict failure events and can have significant impacts on when we service and replace components.
How does the cable plug Type 8605 allow us to provide this diagnostic information?
The Type 8605 cable plug for solenoid valves has the ability to integrate any solenoid valve into an industrial Ethernet Network. This is done by using a CAN Open based digital communication protocol to send and receive signals to an Industrial Ethernet gateway Type ME43. The gateway then translates the CAN signal into any Industrial Ethernet Communication protocol through a simple configuration done using the free Burkert Communicator software.
One of the unique benefits of this cable plug is that it does not only provide diagnostic information but it allows you to use multiple valves in a large network with only a single IP address reducing PLC costs. This device also works in combination with all other Burkert EDIP sensors, mass flow controllers, airlines, and control heads.
With simple cabling and the free Burkert Communicator software diagnosing and configuring devices can be easily done on any PC or laptop.
