Tank blanketing for food production with Bürkert

Tank blanketing , sometimes called inert gas shielding, is a method that involves filling the space above the liquid in a tank with an inert gas, usually nitrogen (N₂), to protect the contents. In food manufacturing, there are several important advantages to this technique, especially for products that are sensitive to oxidation, contamination, or moisture.

Here are some key benefits of Tank blanketing:

1. Protection against oxidation

Many food products, such as oils, beverages and fats , are sensitive to oxidation, which can deteriorate taste, color and shelf life. By replacing oxygen with nitrogen, oxidation is prevented and product quality is maintained.

2. Extended shelf life

By minimizing contact with air and moisture, food products can stay fresher longer, reducing food waste and improving product stability.

3. Prevents microbial growth

Some bacteria and molds thrive in oxygenated environments. Tank blanketing helps create an anaerobic (oxygen-free) environment, which reduces the risk of microbial contamination.

4. Improved security

Tanks containing flammable or easily oxidizing substances, such as certain vegetable oils and alcoholic products, can pose a fire hazard. Using nitrogen instead of oxygen reduces the risk of ignition and explosion.

5. Reduces foaming and evaporation

Some food liquids can foam or evaporate when exposed to air. An inert gas barrier helps to reduce these problems and maintain the volume and properties of the products.

6. Improved process control

Tank blanketing helps stabilize pressure in tanks and processes, which can improve manufacturing process efficiency and reduce equipment wear.

7. Preserves aroma and flavor

For food products such as coffee, wine, beer and juice, taste and aroma are crucial. Eliminating oxygen contact preserves the natural flavors better.

How is tank blanketing done today?

Modern systems use automatic pressure control valves and sensors to ensure a constant inert gas atmosphere in the tank. The process usually goes like this:

Gas supply – Nitrogen or other inert gas is supplied from a gas cylinder, liquid tank, or a generator.
Pressure monitoring – A pressure control valve controls the gas flow to maintain a predetermined pressure in the upper part of the tank.
Venting and equalization – When liquid is drained from the tank, gas automatically fills the void to prevent air from entering.
Overpressure management – If the pressure gets too high, a pressure relief valve releases excess gas.

How does Bürkert's solution for Tank blanketing work?

Precision-controlled gas supply through a pressure regulation system with hygienic valves ensures that an inert gas (e.g. nitrogen) maintains a constant pressure above the liquid in the fermentation tank. This protects the medium from oxygen and other contaminants.

The pressure control system consists of the Type 2380 , a compact and CIP/SIP-compatible valve, which is used to regulate the gas flow. The valve is integrated with Bürkert's ELEMENT series of positioners and process controllers, providing high precision and reliability . The system is FDA and GMP approved, designed to eliminate contamination risks. Unlike standard solenoid valves, which often suffer from corrosion and clogging, Bürkert's solution is robust and maintenance-free . The system can be integrated into a PLC fieldbus network for automatic monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Advantages compared to traditional solutions

  • Increased operational reliability – Fewer errors, lower maintenance costs.
  • Hygienic design – CIP/SIP compatible, minimizing contamination risks.
  • Compact & space-saving – 83% smaller than traditional alternatives.
  • Flexible & modular – Can be customized with different valve sizes, connections and control solutions.
